Spend a week walking the lungomare in Camogli or the back streets of the Marais in July and the formula begins to reveal itself. The European summer wardrobe is small, repetitive and quietly confident. It is also almost entirely made of linen.

The long linen dress
If there is one piece worth investing in, it is a well-cut linen dress in ivory, sand or chalk white. Long enough to walk into dinner, light enough to walk to the beach in. Worn with leather slides during the day and a stack of gold bangles at night.
The neutral set
A linen camisole and matching wide-leg trouser in oatmeal, chocolate or soft taupe. Quiet, photogenic, and infinitely re-wearable. Add a straw bag and you have a complete look in two pieces.

European women dress simply, then layer a single intentional gesture: a silk scarf knotted at the wrist, a leather belt over a loose dress, hair twisted into a low clip. The styling is the look.
Buy fewer things. Wear them more often. Tie a scarf around at least one of them.
