How to Build a Chic Summer Capsule Wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is not a hashtag. It is the oldest, quietest principle in dressing: own fewer things, choose them carefully, and let them work together. In summer, when the climate forgives less and the suitcase shrinks, it is the most rewarding exercise of the year.

Below, the twelve pieces our editors build a chic summer wardrobe around — and the three rules that make them sing.

The twelve pieces

Every piece earns its place by working in at least three outfits.

  • A long linen dress in ivory or sand
  • A linen camisole
  • A wide-leg linen or cotton trouser
  • A tailored cotton shirt, oversized
  • A black one-piece swimsuit
  • A pair of denim shorts, well-cut
  • A midi skirt in a neutral
  • A silk slip dress for evening
  • Leather slides and a leather sandal with a small heel
  • A raffia tote and a small leather shoulder bag
  • A straw hat with a wide brim
  • A linen blazer in oatmeal

Rule one: one palette, three tones

A capsule works when everything in it speaks the same language. Pick a palette — warm neutrals, cool greys, soft earth tones — and stay within three close shades. Anything else can be added through accessories.

Rule two: shoes are the spine

Two pairs of shoes, well chosen, will carry an entire wardrobe. A flat sandal in tan or dark brown, and a slightly dressier slide or kitten heel. Both should be comfortable enough to walk in.

Rule three: invest in the small things

A gold chain, a pair of hoops, a leather belt, a tortoiseshell clip. These are the details that distinguish a capsule from a uniform — and they cost very little to do well.

Style, at the end of the summer, is what you decide not to bring.

A capsule wardrobe will not change your life. It will simply make getting dressed quieter, faster and more elegant — which, in August, is everything.
