From the French pharmacie to the Italian seaside, the small, slow gestures that define European summer beauty.

European summer beauty is less a routine than an attitude. It is a tinted lip balm reapplied in the wing mirror of a Fiat 500. It is a single coat of mascara before a long lunch. It is the assumption that a woman is most beautiful when she looks like she has just walked out of the sea, lightly.
Below, the small rituals our editors have collected from Paris, Capri and the southern coast — and brought home with them.
The French way: less, but better
In Paris, the summer face is essentially the winter face minus a layer or two. SPF replaces day cream. A tinted moisturiser replaces foundation. Lipstick becomes balm. Eyes are left alone.
The single product the French woman will not give up in July is her pharmacy face mist, kept refrigerated and reached for between the third arrondissement and the fifth.
The Italian way: skin first, always
Italian summer beauty is built around glow. Olive oil on shoulders before the beach. A drop of bronzing serum mixed into moisturiser. A coral blush warmed between two fingers and pressed high on the cheek. Hair pulled back, wet, and left to dry in the sun.
An Italian woman in August needs no foundation. She needs a good cream and better light.
The Mediterranean lip
Across the coast — from Marseille to Mykonos — the most copied beauty look is also the simplest: a slightly bitten, slightly stained lip. A balm, a sheer berry or terracotta tint, blotted, reapplied at the table.
Hair: rinsed, never washed
Few European women wash their hair every day in summer. Salt water is its own styling product. A wide-toothed comb, a leave-in oil and a tortoiseshell clip do the rest.
The lesson, if there is one, is this: European summer beauty trusts the skin, the sun and the woman herself to do most of the work. The products are there to support, never to perform.
